History:
Andromeda is the middle child of Cygnus and Druella Black, younger sister of Bellatrix Black, and older sister of Narcissa Black. Though in all honesty, they may as well not exist to each other. She always knew she was different from her sisters, even as a child. While Bellatrix kicked and screamed and got her way, and Narcissa demanded, she said please and thank you and refrained from tormenting the house elves. She learned very quickly that if she asked, the house elves would simply pretend to cower before her, making things much easier when it came to the family.
To be honest, Andromeda was usually picked on by her older sister as a child. She never made a big fuss over it, but she knew Bellatrix didn't like her. And why should she? Narcissa was mother's favorite, and Bellatrix was father's, there just wasn't anyone for Andromeda to attach herself to. Instead, she found comfort and friends in the many books that were in her father's study. That wasn't to say she did little else but read, but she did rather enjoy that a lot.
It wasn't until Bellatrix was gone to Hogwarts that Andromeda even thought to come out of her shell. She easily gave into all the training that Mrs. Black was giving her and Narcissa as to how to become a proper young lady, which she absolutely loved. Not so much because they were being groomed to look nice and not be heard, but because it was the only time she ever felt she had her mother's attention. For two years, Andromeda enjoyed her home life, not having anyone around to tease her for liking books, or keeping to herself.
At age eleven, she was heart broken when her best friend ( up to that point ) didn't get an owl from Hogwarts. Her parents forbade her from seeing Vanessa Jones any longer, as being a squib was the equivalent to being a mudblood. Staying friends with her though, was her very first act of rebellion, and she very well liked it.
When she arrived at Hogwarts, she knew she would be in Slytherin before she even put the Sorting Hat on. Secretly, however, she wanted to be sorted into Ravenclaw ( or any other house, really ) just so she wouldn't have to be with Bellatrix. Of course, that wouldn't do because her father would properly cast a kitten and disown her right away, or at least she thinks so. So perhaps it was good that barely a second after it touched the top of her head, Slytherin was the name it called out. Clearly, she would need to find other ways of avoiding her sister. Bellatrix, of course, was pleased to have her younger sister in her house. The younger girl figured it was easier to keep track of and torment should she feel it was necessary, and torment her, Bellatrix certainly did. Mercilessly.
Andromeda ran with the Slytherins of her house and year on and off the whole time she was at Hogwarts. Sometimes they were just so stuck up and elitist that she just stopped being around them for fear she would curse them into the next year. That wasn't to say she didn't have friends outside of her house and year, because she did, and very many of them. While everyone knew her sister Bellatrix and cowered before her, they always welcomed Andromeda ( once they got over the initial shock of course and realized that she and Bellatrix were complete polar opposites, thank Merlin ). She was a kind girl, who always helped others with homework, no matter how much of her own she still needed to finish.
In her very first year, she became friends with a muggle born boy named Ted Tonks that sat beside her in potions. They sat together out of necessity, the boy knowing who she was by name, although only because others had told him. He had been surprised by her kindness when she offered him her ink ( and a smile ) in the middle of their second class. He asked her out on dates several times during their time at school, and while she always politely declined, he never gave up. She liked that about him, a lot, but she always feared what Bellatrix might do to him if given the right motivation. It was just safer for him if she turned him down.
Through Ted, Andromeda learned that there was nothing wrong with muggles. They were just regular people like she was, except they didn't have any magical ability. For a while, she was shocked and appalled at the mere thought of people living their whole lives without magic. She realized that if Nessa could do it, and other squibs, then really muggles wouldn't have it too hard. They never had magic to miss to begin with. These discoveries only seemed to enlighten her, and make her realize more and more that everything she had ever been brought up to know... was simply wrong.
Even before finishing her education, Mrs. Black was attempting to marry off Andromeda, which she was not a fan of at all. She was purposely bratty to her suitors, making sure to be extra bitchy, or bratty to them. No pureblooded man wanted to marry a difficult woman, and she used this very much to her advantage. She easily manipulated the boys, and when they tried to advance on her, she played the victim. It served it's purpose, and Mrs. Black very quickly realized she would need to find someone who was able to keep up with her middle daughter, at least mentally.
She was never openly rude, or manipulative in front of her family, choosing instead to let them think she was inclined to let someone walk all over her the same way Bellatrix usually did. At least this way, they would believe her if she claimed a boy touched her inappropriately.
After Hogwarts, she and Ted remained friendly. They sent each other owls all the time, and he continued to ask her out on dates, she never accepted. Afterall, a Black dating a muggleborn? People would surely talk. A month after her eighteenth birthday, Andromeda agreed to a date and thus began the most epic love story she would ever know. Not that she would get to go on that date, because she somehow ended up on this blasted ship instead of going on her date. Honestly, what luck....
Occupational History: None, but she wanted to be a photographer for a long time... or perhaps a healer. Her mother did not approve of either of her choices. Goals: To find someone she really cares about to marry, no matter who they are.
Appearance: Andromeda is short and pale, with wavy ( sometimes curly ) long brown hair and eyes that sometimes turn a little hazel. She looks a lot like her older sister Bellatrix, but feels she is more feminine in her appearance and in her mannerisms. Although by no means as much as Narcissa. While the strong aristocratic features were obviously passed on to her, she does generally smile a lot more than her sisters do, and her big doe eyes just make her a lot more approachable. She likes things to be clean and orderly, her clothes, her hair, everything.
While she knows that she can't exactly wear Muggle clothing at home, she is fascinated by Muggle Fashion and how crisp and clean everything is. She loves jewelry, and make up, and always carries herself with a little bit of that Black pride she says she dislikes so much. Her favorite things to wear when she's not at home are denim jeans, she finds them very practical and they don't get quite as dirty as robes do. She also loves all those loose and frilly shirts, tunics and peasant shirts, and dresses. Fringe, she's not crazy about, but she does love just about anything.
Usually she dresses casually, leaving the big glamwear for important dates. If you don't separate the two, how could one possibly appreciate the difference, right? Her favorite thing to wear, would have to be flip flops. She blames this on her friend Vanessa, who sent her a pair for her birthday one summer. Muggles liked them, and Andromeda could certainly see why.
Special Abilities/Powers: She's pretty handy with cleaning spells. Personality:
Andromeda is very sweet and laid back, but is capable of turning around and causing some pain if pushed far enough. She grew up learning some of the best dark magic and defense spells from the best teachers, her parents. She knows how to defend herself, and while she would prefer not to get into an altercation, she will stand and fight if not left any other option. She would much rather like to keep the peace though, and avoids confrontation at all costs.
She's not snobby like her sisters, and would not only talk to people she doesn't know, but would actually make friends with them. She doesn't think that just because she is of pure blood means that she can mistreat people, and often wonders if perhaps she was dropped off on the wrong doorstep as a baby. She likes to be happy, and tries her hardest to not let others bring her down.
Making conversation comes naturally to Andromeda, she's a very social person by nature, and enjoys talking to people and finding out all about them. This might be because growing up she only really had her sisters around, and so she gets easily excited at the prospect of speaking to someone new. Sometimes, she's just at a loss for words, and she does often struggle for something to talk about. That is easily remedied by making a comment about the weather, or giving the other person a compliment on their clothing. Compliments, she's learned, are the way to people's hearts. Although she wouldn't just say something for the sake of saying it.
Conversely, she also likes to be alone sometimes. When she does, she makes it perfectly clear she doesn't want to be bothered, by anyone. When she's in those moods, she isolates herself. While at school, it was in the library, once she left, she could simply apparate to somewhere she could be alone, and simply stays there until she's in a better mood.
Her nasty streak rarely comes to light. Only when she's pushed and pushed to her breaking point, however having grown up with Bellatrix has proven most vital in having patience ( and being tolerant ). She is, like most Blacks, very comfortable with a wand. So comfortable in fact, she spends half her time twirling it between her fingers absentmindedly. She knows she's more likely to lose a physical fight than a duel or any other scuffle in which magic is used, but that doesn't mean she wouldn't give it her all anyway. Although she is a pacifist, if someone were to threaten her or anyone she cares about, she will quickly turn on them. She simply doesn't put up with people badmouthing anyone she knows or likes.
More recently, Andromeda has discovered that she and Bellatrix are ( more or less ) one in the same. She is just as set in her ways as her sister, to the point of being pigheaded. The only difference is that while Bellatrix is on the dark side, Andromeda is not. While she is certainly curious about all the dark magic her sister does, she would never openly admit that it interests her, or even that she thinks she and Bellatrix are remotely the alike. That is something private, and no one needs to know that.
While easy going for the most part, she does hold grudges if she is wronged, and due to her stubborn streak is less than willing to work them out. If she feels she has been wronged or mistreated, she is likely to lash out with harsh words at the very least. Luckily enough for her, Ted is usually around to talk her down from these situations.
The best advice she can give anyone is to follow their heart, and their instincts because they would never lead a person astray. She is a hopeless romantic, mostly because she's read entirely too many romance novels, and seen too many muggle romance films. She is certain one day her prince will come and take her away to a place where bloodlines and power don't really matter.
Strengths: Caring, compassionate, understanding. She's great at Charms and Defense spells because she knows a lot of dark magic, but would never use it. Weaknesses: Anything to do with Divinity. She simply just doesn't understand it. Likes: Honesty, persistense, loyalty, muggle fashion, cute boys, being the black sheep ( no pun intended ), romance novels, animals. Dislikes: Cruelty, injustice, lack of common sense, confrontation, superiority complexes. Being called Andy, or any variation thereof. It's Andromeda, get it right. Very few people are allowed to call her by the two nicknames she likes, and if you have to ask, you're not one of those people. It's a very touchy subject for her. Quirks: Wand twirling. Whenever Andromeda is stressed, bored, annoyed, needs to study like a mad woman, or has free time she twirls her wand between her fingers. Her mother hates it, and sometimes she doesn't realize she may actually look a little threatening doing it. It calms her down though, and it started on her first day of school, only getting progressively worse as the years at Hogwarts went on. Motivation: To find and marry someone she loves, not someone she's forced to. If she finds that, then it would be to have a family and raise her child, or children, with all the love and caring that she didn't have growing up. Fears: Ending up like her mother and aunt. Cold and bitter, and unrelenting.
